Favorite hiking and walking trails in New Jersey
Spring is in full swing and its the perfect time to venture out with your family for a weekend walk or hike in New Jersey. Read on for my favorite hiking and walking trails in New Jersey.
Natirar
Last summer, I discovered this scenic gem in Gladstone. Natirar is a 404-acre property located in the scenic hills of Somerset County within the municipalities of Peapack/Gladstone, Far Hills and Bedminster. Besides the picturesque walking tails that pass along the scenic North Branch of the Raritan River corridor, through beautiful wooded areas and across fields and meadows, it makes a great place for family photos! Check out photos from the family session I shot there last fall HERE.
South Mountain Fairy Trail
If you haven’t been to the South Mountain Fairy Trail in South Mountain Reservation in Millburn, you’re missing out on a magical miniature world in New Jersey’s beautiful woods! Although I’ve hiked along several trails in South Mountain Reservation, I had never even heard of this treasure trove of mystical little fairy houses until relatively recently. The reservation spans over 2,000 acres but the trail itself can be found near the Locust Grove entrance at 197 Glen Avenue in Millburn.
Hacklebarney State Park
Located near Long Valley, Hacklebarney State Park features a three-mile circular trail (the Black River Trail), that meanders along a brook. There are some small waterfalls and lots of rocks along the path.
Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area
Pyramid Mountain is located near the Kinnelon/Montville border. There are rocky footpaths, several streams, and , Tripod Rock, a huge boulder which is balanced precariously upon three smaller stones. There are also two overlooks.
High Point State Park in Sussex
There are several great hikes from which to choose from at High Point State Park. The kid-friendly red/green loop heads along the ridge and then goes past a lake. There’s also a 220-foot monument erected in honor of all war veterans. At the top of the monument you’ll see 360-degree views of the Catskill and Pocono Mountains.
Of course, these are just a few of the many scenic outdoor spots for families to visit in New Jersey. I’m always looking for new places to discover and would love to hear your favorite places to hike in the comments below!
