Timing your maternity photos can seem tricky since every pregnancy is different, but I have a few tips to help you pick the best time for your maternity photos and get the most out of your session.
First, you’ll want to consider how you’re feeling and the size of your baby bump.
Schedule Your Maternity Session in your third trimester
Typically, most women will want to have maternity pictures taken during your third trimester, somewhere between 27 and 34 weeks. The 7th and 8th month of pregnancy usually work well for many soon-to-be moms because by then your baby bump should be well defined. But there are always exceptions. In fact, in the image above, this beautiful mother-to-be was 39 weeks pregnant when we had her maternity photo session. Not only did she look stunning, but she was fortunate to be feeling great. Just keep in mind that scheduling your maternity session after 35 weeks might mean that you miss out on capturing your pregnancy if your baby should make an earlier arrival.
Most important, you’ll want to have your session when you’re feeling your best and are still be able to move around with ease, which may become more difficult toward the end of your pregnancy. Being comfortable and feeling beautiful will make your photos feel more natural and relaxed.
Plan an earlier photo session if you’re expecting twins
Generally, if you’re expecting twins, it’s best to book your maternity photoshoot earlier since many women carrying multiples deliver earlier than their due date. The same is usually true for women with a “high-risk” pregnancy. A good rule of thumb is to schedule your session for the second trimester, between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. Usually, by this time, the belly is well-established.
Reach out to your photographer early to book your session
Contact your photographer when you are about 2 months pregnant to make sure that you are able to reserve a date, especially if you are planning on a fall maternity session since this is an especially busy time for New Jersey photography sessions.
Six Tips for When to Take Maternity Photos
- During your third trimester, between 27 and 34 weeks.
- Schedule earlier if you’re having twins, between 24 and 28 weeks.
- If it’s your first pregnancy, you may want to consider booking later to be sure your bump is defined.
- If you’ve been pregnant before, you may want to consider booking earlier (before 30 weeks) since moms typically show faster after their first pregnancy.
- Consider how you feel and don’t wait too long since it’s common to feel tired and uncomfortable towards the end of your pregnancy.
- Don’t schedule your session too early, as it may be difficult to see a defined bump in your photos.
