Planning an outdoor family photoshoot near Westfield, NJ, and not sure which park would work best? As a Westfield area family photographer for over 10 years, I’ve photographed sessions throughout Union County and the surrounding towns, learning which parks offer the most beautiful scenery, flattering natural light, and space for kids to relax and have fun.
As a local family photographer, I spend a lot of time exploring parks around Westfield, looking for beautiful light, quiet corners, and spots where kids can actually enjoy themselves. These are the places I recommend most often to families who want relaxed, natural photos.
The Westfield area is surrounded by wonderful parks that photograph beautifully in every season. Within a short drive you’ll find scenic locations in nearby towns like Cranford, Mountainside, Clark, Springfield, and Roselle — from quiet wooded trails to open fields, ponds, and charming bridges.
Most of these parks are located within 10–20 minutes of downtown Westfield, making them convenient choices for families throughout the area.
If you’re looking for a quick overview, here are my favorite parks for family photos near Westfield NJ.
Families often search for the best parks for family photos near Westfield NJ, because the area has so many scenic outdoor spaces. From open grassy fields for running and playing to wooded trails, ponds, and charming bridges, Union County parks provide a variety of backdrops for portraits. Choosing a park that fits your family’s style and season can make all the difference in your session.
Mindowaskin Park in Westfield, NJ, is a charming downtown park with a pond, bridge, and tree-lined paths that provide a beautiful backdrop to photos year-round.
Address: 385 East Broad Street, Westfield, NJ

Mindowaskin Park is one of my favorite spots for family photos in Westfield. Everything is close together, which makes it especially nice for families with younger kids. The gazebo, gardens, and pond create beautiful backdrops in every season.
Photographer Tip: If your kids are used to visiting Mindowaskin Park to enjoy the playground, be sure to set expectations ahead of time that you’ll be taking pictures. If you haven’t been to this park before, I suggest entering from East Broad Street, parking next to the police station (across from the gazebo), and avoiding the park entrance on East Euclid Street near the playground.
Tamaques Park in Westfield, NJ, offers wooded trails and seasonal foliage, making it ideal for fall family photos.
There’s a small playground and swings next to the pond, which can be distracting for families with young children.
Address: Tamaques Way off of Lamberts Mill Road

Lenape Park spans Westfield and Cranford, featuring paved paths, a hidden pond, and quiet natural areas perfect for candid family portraits.
Address: 130 Kenilworth Boulevard Cranford, NJ

Echo Lake Park in Mountainside, NJ, features a large lake, wooded areas, and open fields that make lovely backdrops for photos year-round.
What I Love:
Address: 1028 Springfield Ave, Mountainside, NJ

Echo Lake Park is perfect for families who love a scenic, nature-filled setting. There’s plenty of space for kids to explore while we take photos along the lake. The water views and tree-lined paths create a peaceful backdrop that feels especially beautiful in the fall.

Nomahegan Park in Cranford features a charming bridge, pond, and wooded paths — a favorite for spring and maternity sessions.
What I Love:
Address: 995 Springfield Ave., Cranford, NJ

Nomahegan Park has always been one of my favorite parks. I’ve taken countless family walks there over the years, and it holds a lot of fond memories. A scenic walking path winds past the pond, through wooded areas, and over a small bridge. The park is especially pretty in Spring when the cherry blossoms bloom (typically mid-March through early April). The lake, bridges, and tree-lined trails also add a lot of variety to family portraits.
As much as I love this location, its proximity to Springfield Avenue and the neighboring roads that cut through the park can make it fairly crowded. For that reason, it’s not usually my first choice for families with very young children, but works especially well for teen or maternity sessions.

Watchung Reservation in Union County, NJ, is a vast nature reserve with wooded trails and quiet spaces, perfect for families seeking a rustic outdoor setting.
Address: West R Tracy Drive, or 452 New Providence Road, Mountainside, NJ

If you’re an outdoorsy family, you’ll love Watchung Reservation – a vast nature reserve with wooded trails. The natural beauty and serene ambiance make it the perfect place to create timeless memories with your loved ones. Not far from the Trailside Center, you can also find a small field that occasionally gets a scattering of purple and white Queen Anne’s Lace wildflowers in mid-summer.

Oak Ridge Park in Clark, NJ, features wide open fields, walking paths, and cherry blossom trees that photograph beautifully in spring and summer.
What I Love:
Address: 201 Oak Ridge Road, Clark, NJ

Looking for wide-open spaces mixed in with some great fall foliage or summer greenery?
At Oak Ridge Park, you’ll find beautiful walking paths and open lawns where kids can run around while we capture natural moments.

Warinanco Park in Union County is known for ponds, scenic walking paths, and seasonal cherry blossoms — ideal for spring family photos.
Address: Warinanco Park Roadway, Elizabeth, NJ

Situated in nearby Roselle and Elizabeth, Warinanco Park offers 204 acres including tranquil lakes, lush meadows, and scenic walking paths, in addition to multiple playing fields. Whether you’re strolling along the waterfront or exploring the park’s hidden corners, you’ll find countless opportunities for capturing family moments in a picturesque setting.

Tip: Weekday evenings, while still busy, are a bit better and my preferred time to schedule a session.

Briant Park in Springfield, NJ, offers open meadows, shaded trails, a pond, and charming bridges, making it perfect for relaxed family portraits.
What I Love:
Address: 301 Shunpike Rd., Springfield, NJ

Briant Park is a wonderful spot for family photos. I often recommend this location for families who want a relaxed outdoor setting and a little variety in backdrops. Kids usually love the open meadows, while the shaded paths, gazebo, and pond create beautiful, peaceful backdrops for portraits.

When planning a session, I also think about the season, the light, and how busy the park will be. Early mornings or weekday evenings usually give us softer light and fewer people around, which helps kids feel more relaxed and makes the photos feel natural.
After your session, treat your family to one of these local family-friendly favorites:
Choosing the right park can make such a difference in how relaxed and fun your family photos feel. If you’re not sure which location would work best for your kids or the season, I’m always happy to recommend a location that fits your vision.
Every family is a little different, and the best park for your photos often depends on your kids’ ages, the season, and the kind of feel you want for your images. When families book a session with me, I help them choose a location that fits their family’s personality—whether that means open fields where kids can run around or quiet paths with soft evening light.
