There’s something magical about those first days with your newborn—tiny fingers, sleepy stretches, the way they curl perfectly in your arms. When I photograph these moments, I want the images to feel as warm and natural as they do in real life. And a big part of that? Finding the perfect light in your home.
Outdoor sessions are all about chasing that dreamy Golden Hour glow, but indoors, the rules are different. After more than a decade of photographing families in their homes, I’ve found that mid-morning (between 9 am and 11 am ) is the sweet spot for the most beautiful, natural light and the most relaxed experience for everyone. Here’s why:
Soft, Even Lighting – Mid-morning light is bright without being harsh, creating beautiful even lighting that flatters newborn skin tones resulting in soft, natural-looking images like you see on my website.
Happier Babies and Parents – In my experience, after a full feeding and a good rest, babies tend to be calm, sleepy, and snuggly—perfect for capturing those peaceful moments.
Less Stress for Parents – As a parent, I remember all too well that by late afternoon, fatigue sets in for everyone, and toddlers are more prone to meltdowns. Scheduling your session in the morning helps avoid nap-time struggles and keeps the experience calm and enjoyable.
While every home is different, I’ve found that afternoon sessions (12 PM – 5 PM) are typically not ideal. Here’s why:
Window Placement Size & Natural Light: Large windows bring in more light, allowing for more flexibility in timing. Not sure if your home has ‘right light’? No worries! That’s where my experience comes in! We’ll chat beforehand, and I’ll ask a few quick questions to get a feel for your space. Then, once I arrive, I’ll take a look around, find the best spots, and adjust as needed. If the light isn’t quite right in one room, no problem—we’ll pivot and find another cozy space that works beautifully!
Weather & Season: Cloudy days provide softer, diffused light, while bright sunny days create stronger contrasts. Winter light is different from summer light, which is more intense so timing may shift slightly based on the season. Very overcast or stormy weather can significantly reduce the amount of natural light in your home.
Rainy Days & Dark Skies: If it’s especially cloudy or rainy day, natural light will be reduced. Not to worry though! I always bring an off-camera flash to subtly enhance the natural light while keeping the look soft and natural.
Surrounding Environment: If your home is surrounded by trees (which is common in NJ!), they can filter or block light—especially in the spring and summer when the foliage is dense.
Your Baby’s Routine: The best time for photos is when your baby is happiest—typically after a feeding and before they get too sleepy. Scheduling your session in the morning helps ensure a calm and relaxed experience for everyone.
For the most beautiful, natural newborn photos, mid-morning is the ideal time for in-home sessions. Not only is the light at its best—bright, even, and flattering—but babies are also more content, making the experience enjoyable for the whole family. Rest assured, when you book with me, we’ll chat about your baby’s routine, your space, and windows to find the perfect time to capture those first precious moments with your little one.
