Imagine curling up on your living‑room sofa, your toddler snuggled under your arm, and gentle baby kicks fluttering beneath your favorite dress. That’s the beauty of an in‑home maternity photoshoot—no rushing out the door, no need for shoes—just real life, beautifully captured where your story is unfolding.
As a New Jersey lifestyle photographer, I get excited when a family opts for an in-home maternity session, especially when they have a toddler. This guide provides a comprehensive overview of what to expect during a session like this, sharing insights from my firsthand experience. Learn about the key advantages of this relaxed and personal setting, including comfort for your little one and a convenient, stress-free experience. We’ll also cover my approach, which focuses on capturing genuine moments through playful prompts and a child-led pace, ensuring a beautiful, authentic collection of memories for your family.
I know toddlers have short-attention spans. My approach aims to create a relaxed and fun experience, focusing on playful prompts like reading a book or cuddling on the couch. We’ll take breaks when needed to keep everyone happy and engaged. For the G. family’s beautiful session, for example, we took a little pause for the toddler to read his favorite book, and it led to some of the most precious pictures.
Pro Tip: If your toddler is especially energetic, once we’ve captured a few playful moments, ask them to pick out a favorite book. Reading together often creates calm, quiet connection and beautifully tender images like the ones you see in this post. This little boy was full of energy, but when I asked him to grab his favorite book, he proudly brought over a whole stack and climbed into his dad’s lap. Simple moments like this–reading together, snuggling in close—are how I capture genuine, connected images that reflect your everyday routines.
Rather than strict, formal poses, I’ll guide you into natural, connection-filled moments. If your toddler decides to pop in (or take a break), we’ll simply follow their lead. My goals is to capture your family’s real connection, not perfect poses or forced smiles. I’ll give you gentle direction that feels comfortable and authentic, and I’ll use playful prompts to capture those genuine, fleeting moments.
I never ask children to smile or look at the camera—and I kindly ask that you don’t either. There’s no need for bribes or “say cheese!” moments. I want your child to feel safe and free to be themselves. That’s when we capture the most heartfelt, genuine expressions—the little looks and in-between moments that truly tell your story.
Pro Tip: Stay present, positive, and engaged with your partner and child. Let go of expectations about how your child should behave. When you do, their real personality shines–and that’s when the magic happens!
Pro Tip: Neutral, soft tones, like the ones in the photos shared here, photograph beautifully and let your connection take center stage. Notice how the sage and gray outfits in the photos below also fit seamlessly with their airy, minimalistic home decor.
Pro Tip: Before we begin, I’ll often invite your toddler to give me a quick tour of the house (they love being in charge!). This helps them feel comfortable and gives me a chance to find the best spots with soft, natural light–usually by a big window or patio doors.
When is the best time to book an in-home maternity session?
Based on my experience, I recommend booking your session when you are between 28–36 weeks pregnant. At this time, your belly is beautifully round, but you’re still comfortable to move with ease.
My house is small—can we still do an in-home session?
Absolutely! I often work in small spaces. All we need is one good window and a few uncluttered corners. I’ll take care of the rest.
What if my toddler won’t cooperate?
That’s completely normal! From my years of working with families, I can assure you that it’s okay for toddlers to have off days. We’ll go with the flow and follow your child’s lead. I have plenty of playful tricks and prompts to keep things light, and we’ll take breaks as needed. It’s often during the unexpected moments that we capture the most beautiful and honest images.
