Planning your next family photos session in New Jersey? As both a photographer and a mom, I know it’s easy to feel a little overwhelmed. Between busy schedules, outfit planning, and making sure the kids are happy, there’s a lot to think about!
The good news? A little preparation goes a long way. Over the years, I’ve noticed a few common slip-ups that can make family photos more stressful than they need to be. Today, I’m sharing six mistakes parents often make before their photo session in NJ—plus my simple tips for keeping your session relaxed, joyful, and fun.
(And don’t worry—none of the parents pictured here made these mistakes!)
As moms, we’ve all been there—trying to fit soccer, errands, and family photos into one jam-packed Saturday. But here’s the thing: kids (and parents!) do best when the day feels calm.
If you’ve booked a sunset session, especially with toddlers or young kids, try to keep the rest of your day low-key. Stick to your normal routine as much as possible and avoid big, tiring activities like the beach or amusement park before photos.
Quick tip: Instead of cramming the day, make your session the highlight! Many families bring a favorite book to read together during photos or plan a fun treat afterward, like ice cream sundaes at home. A sweet little incentive goes a long way with kids.
This is one of the most common mistakes parents make before their photo session in NJ—especially during early spring or late autumn when the weather can be unpredictable.
If kids are cold, itchy, or uncomfortable, it’s tough for them to relax and smile naturally. Layers are your best friend! Think cozy cardigans, a shawl, or a soft wool coat for late fall. That way, kids can stay warm and comfortable while still looking stylish.
Quick tip: Always have a back-up outfit on hand. It’s easier to remove a layer than it is to warm up a shivering child.
We all know a hungry child does = a cranky kid. Since sessions are typically scheduled early evening before sunset, plan to feed your children beforehand. Bring along water and a quick and non-messy snack too. Avoid anything that would stain your child’s hands or face or get stuck in her teeth for photos.
Clothing plays such a big role in how much you’ll love your final images. That’s why I spend time during your pre-session consult chatting about colors, styles, and even sharing my favorite shopping resources.
The biggest mistake? Waiting until the night before your session to figure out what everyone’s wearing. That’s when moms discover too-tight shoes or an outfit that doesn’t fit.
Quick tip: Lay out everyone’s outfits a week in advance and do a quick “fit check.” That way, you’ll have plenty of time to swap sizes or add accessories if needed.
Mom Note: I offer styling suggestions to all clients and I encourage you to reach out with any questions. I’m happy to help!
A well-rested child is a happy child. If your little one normally naps, try your best to stick with that schedule. Waking kids early from naps usually backfires and can lead to crankiness during photos.
For summer and early fall sessions, keep in mind that the best light happens later in the evening—sometimes close to bedtime. In that case, consider planning an extra nap that day or booking a late autumn session, when we can start earlier (around 4 pm).
Quick tip: Adjust nap and snack times a little on session day to help kids be at their happiest during that golden sunset light.
Keep in mind that summer and early fall sunset sessions start later in the evening, approximately two hours before sunset. If that means you’ll need to keep your child up past bedtime, I suggest either planning an extra nap for that day, or considering a late autumn session, which would start around 4 pm.
This one’s tough, mama—I get it. You’ve invested time, effort, and money into your session, and you want everything to go smoothly. But here’s the truth: perfection isn’t real life. And that’s okay.
The most beautiful images often come from in-between moments—the way your toddler grabs your hand, the giggles when siblings hug, or even the comfort of a quick cuddle if someone gets teary.
Remember, you hired me because I see the beauty in your family exactly as you are. Your job is simply to show up and love on your people. I’ll take care of the rest.
I hope these tips help you avoid the most common mistakes parents make before their photo session in NJ—and leave you feeling more relaxed, prepared, and excited.
