Planning a family photo session in New Jersey? As both a photographer and a mom, I know it can feel overwhelming. Between busy schedules, outfit choices, and making sure the kids are happy, there’s a lot to think about!
The good news? A little preparation goes a long way. Over the years, I’ve noticed a few common slip-ups that can make family photos more stressful than they need to be. Today, I’m sharing six mistakes parents make before their photo session—plus my simple tips for keeping your session relaxed, joyful, and fun.
(And don’t worry—none of the parents pictured here made these mistakes!)
One of the most common mistakes parents make before their photo session is overplanning the day.
If you’ve booked a sunset session, especially with toddlers or young kids, try to keep the rest of your day low-key. Stick to your normal routine as much as possible and avoid big, tiring activities like the beach or amusement park before photos. Kids (and parents!) do best when the day feels calm.
Instead of cramming in errands and activities, make your session the highlight of the day! Many families bring a favorite book to read together during photos or plan a fun treat afterward. A simple incentive can help kids feel excited and cooperative kids.
Dressing kids in clothes that are itchy, too tight or inappropriate for the weather is another common family photo session mistake.
If kids are cold or uncomfortable, it’s harder for them to relax and smile naturally. Layers are your best friend! Think cozy cardigans, soft sweaters, or a lightweight jacket for cooler evenings. Layers let kids stay comfortable while still looking stylish.
Quick tip: Always have a backup outfit on hand. Spills and dirt happen, and it’s easier to swap a layer than worry about stains.
A hungry child does = a cranky kid, and no one wants that during photos.
Since outdoor sessions are typically scheduled early evening before sunset, plan to feed your kids beforehand. Bring water and a quick, non-messy snack in case they need a quick boost. Avoid sticky fingers or sugary treats that could stain clothes or leave messy fingers.
A well-fed child is a happier child, and happier kids lead to more relaxed family photos.
Waiting until the night before your session to plan outfits is one of the biggest mistakes parents make before their photo session.
Clothing plays a big role in how much you’ll love your final images. Too-tight shoes, wrinkled outfits, or colors that clash can create unnecessary stress.
Quick tip: Lay out everyone’s outfits a week in advance and do a quick “fit check.” That way, you’ll have plenty of time to swap sizes or add accessories if needed. Coordinated colors and comfortable clothing help the focus stay on your family’s connection — not wardrobe distractions.
Mom Note: I offer styling suggestions to all clients and I encourage you to reach out with any questions. I’m happy to help!
A well-rested child is a happy child.
If your little one normally naps, try your best to stick with that schedule. Waking kids early from naps usually backfires and can lead to crankiness during photos.
For summer and early fall sessions, keep in mind that the best light happens later in the evening—sometimes close to bedtime. In that case, consider planning an extra nap that day or booking a late autumn session, when we can start earlier (around 4 pm).
Quick tip: Adjust nap and snack times a little on session day to help kids be at their happiest during that golden sunset light.
Keep in mind that summer and early fall sunset sessions start later in the evening, approximately two hours before sunset. If that means you’ll need to keep your child up past bedtime, I suggest either planning an extra nap for that day, or considering a late autumn session, which would start around 4 pm.

This one’s tough, mama—I get it. You’ve invested time, effort, and money into your session, and you want everything to go smoothly. But here’s the truth: perfection isn’t real life. And that’s okay.
The most beautiful images often come from in-between moments—the way your toddler grabs your hand, the giggles when siblings hug, or even the comfort of a quick cuddle if someone gets teary.
Remember, you hired me because I see the beauty in your family exactly as you are. Your job is simply to show up and love on your people. I’ll take care of the rest.
Pro Tip: Make Sure Your Photographer’s Style Matches Your Vision
One of the best ways to avoid disappointment is to spend a little time getting to know your photographer’s style before booking. Every photographer approaches family sessions differently.
For example, as a lifestyle family photographer in NJ, I focus on capturing natural, emotive moments rather than posed “everyone look at the camera” shots. If what you love most are playful connections, snuggles, and candid laughter, then my approach may be a perfect fit for you. But if your heart is set on traditional portraits with everyone smiling perfectly, it’s important to choose a photographer who specializes in that.
Quick tip: Browse your photographer’s portfolio, read through their blog posts, and don’t hesitate to ask questions before booking. Open communication helps ensure that your expectations and their style are aligned—so you’ll walk away with images you truly love. (Check out my family portfolio to see if we’re a good fit)

I hope these tips help you avoid the most common mistakes parents make before their photo session in NJ—and leave you feeling more relaxed, prepared, and excited.
