Favorite New Jersey Small Businesses

As a family photographer, I often get to photograph families who have recently moved to New Jersey. A common question I’m often asked is what local shops and restaurants I would recommend. So, whether you’re new to the Scotch Plains – Fanwood area, or just looking for some new places to shop or dine, enjoy my list of favorite New Jersey small businesses.

Favorite Local Food and Coffee

Black Drop Coffee

Scotch Plains’ one and only spot for high-quality, artisan coffee, tea and beverages, Black Drop Coffee also offers a variety of tasty treats and unique and healthy foods. I love their lattes! And, they also brew the best Americano, which has become my Saturday morning staple.

Farinolio

For all around great gourmet sandwiches (the Martelli is my and my husband’s personal favorite), Head to Farinolio in downtown Westfield. The Tuscan “schiacciata” bread, is so good. They also have mouth-watering pastries and gourmet gifts.

Tom the Green Grocer

Offering a treasure trove of fresh and gourmet foods, fresh produce and more, Tom’s offers a convenient and cozy place to shop. The family run store has great gourmet sandwiches and prepared foods, among other things. The fresh fruit salad and tomato bruschetta are scrumptious. Their outdoor seasonal flowers, plants and wreaths are always gorgeous and make me feel like I’m visiting a garden.

Origin Thai in Basking Ridge

If you love Thai food (and who doesn’t), Origin in Basking Ridge is my favorite restaurant for a casual and cozy date night and fantastic and fresh food. Whether you opt to dine indoors, or sit outside on the terrace in the warmer weather, Origin’s offers an inviting ambiance. They also have another location in Morristown.

Gifts and Floral

Blue Jasmine Floral

Treat yourself or someone else to a stunning floral arrangement. Paulina, the Founder of Blue Jasmine (Berkeley Heights), and her team create the most whimsical arrangements. Every floral design is truly unique and a work of art. If you want to learn the art of arranging flowers, I highly recommend their floral design workshops.

Norman’s Hallmark – Fanwood

Norman’s Hallmark is my family’s go to place for cards and gifts for every occasion. In fact, having a nearby one-stop-shop to take my son to shop for gifts for grandparents, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, or family birthdays has been a lifesaver. 

Enchantments

When I don’t have teenager in tow, I enjoy browsing and shopping for gifts at Enchantments in Fanwood. They carry unique curated items crafted by local artists and craftspeople in New Jersey. 

Wellness

On the Side Day Spa in Westfield

Relax and rejuvenate your mind and body when you book one of On the Side’s signature services; I love the lavender aromatherapy massage! I even enjoy just walking into the spa to buy a gift certificate. The peaceful sound of a water fountain and relaxing aroma immediately transport me into a state of Zen. 

Satsang Yoga in Westfield

I began my yoga practice almost 22 years ago and shortly after my husband and I married in 2004, we started taking classes together at Satsang Yoga when they were located in Cranford. Fast forward through a pre-natal yoga class and many other classes over the years, I’ve always enjoyed their offerings. They offer options for both in-person classes and livestream attendance.
