A newborn photo session is a beautiful way to capture the precious moments of your growing family in the place where your family feels most comfortable—your home. Many parents love lifestyle newborn photography because it allows them to relax, snuggle their baby, and document this fleeting season in a natural way.
After photographing many in-home newborn sessions for families across New Jersey, I’ve learned that the most beautiful photos happen when parents feel relaxed and prepared ahead of time.
If this is your first time planning an in-home newborn session, you may be wondering what to expect and how to prepare your family. The good news is that these sessions are designed to be calm, flexible, and baby-led.
These ten simple tips will help you feel confident and prepared, so your newborn photo session at home feels relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.
Start by having a conversation with your photographer about what to expect during and after the session. I include a portrait questionnaire and a session planning phone consult for every client. This the perfect time to discuss goals, ask questions, and share concerns.
Be sure to talk to your family too! Let everyone know what to expect so they feel comfortable and at ease.
For toddlers or older children, frame the session as a fun visit from a friend that will take pictures of them and the new baby. Show kids examples of lifestyle newborn pictures to help them understand what will happen.
Keep a few favorite books handy to make kids feel at ease. Toddlers are more likely to want to participate in the session if they feel at ease and engaged.
Consider planning a special activity or treat for after the session to keep your child’s spirits high.
Reassure your spouse that the session will be easygoing and relaxed. The focus will be on capturing natural and genuine interactions such as snuggling with your baby or playing with an older sibling. Remind them they don’t need to look at the camera unless I ask.

No need for a spotless house! I promise that most homes look exactly the same in those early newborn weeks. We’ll focus on a few bright, comfortable spaces and let the rest of the house fade into the background.
Simply tidy up the key areas where photos will be taken, such as the nursery, master bedroom, living room, or a guest bedroom. Clear bedside tables, hide diaper pails and baby gear, and declutter around windows for the best light.
Turn up the heat to keep your baby cozy—this makes them more comfortable during those adorable detail shots in just a diaper or onesie.
Clothing choices can have a big impact on the overall feel of your images. Neutral colors like creams, muted tones, and soft pastels create a timeless look and are perfect for intimate newborn portraits. Avoid busy patterns or logos that may distract from the moment.
Comfortable, casual pieces will give a relaxed and cozy vibe to your images.
Most important, make sure that you can sit and move comfortably in whatever clothing you choose. Avoid short skirts or dresses that will ride up while sitting.
For your baby, simple is best. A plain onesie or soft swaddling blanket allows their tiny features to shine. Keep extras handy for variety!
Stick to your baby’s routine. If they’re asleep when I arrive, let them snooze! I build in time for feeding and diaper changes, so there’s no need to rush. Whether you’re breastfeeding or bottle-feeding your baby, these can be some of the most meaningful moments you share with your baby. When clients are comfortable, I love to capture these moments.
Often, pets hold a special place in your family and I’m always happy to include them in some candid photos. Make sure your pet is well-behaved, and if they aren’t comfortable with strangers, it might be best to put him away during your session.
My goal is to create natural, meaningful images that capture your family’s essence. Let me guide you into relaxed, authentic moments while you focus on enjoying the time with your baby. After all, that’s why you hired a professional photographer.
Life with little ones can be unpredictable, and that’s okay! Babies may fuss, toddlers may be wiggly—that’s all part of your unique story. When you let go of perfection, your session will feel more natural, and the resulting photos will reflect your family’s love and joy.
Some of my favorite images have come from moments that weren’t planned at all—a toddler climbing onto the bed for a cuddle, or giving his baby sister a kiss.
Above all, remember that this session is about celebrating your growing family. Take a deep breath, snuggle your baby, and savor this special time together. I’ll be there to capture the beauty in the chaos, creating images you’ll treasure for years to come.
Lifestyle newborn sessions aren’t about perfect poses—they’re about remembering what these early days really felt like.

Lifestyle newborn sessions focus on natural moments rather than posed setups. We usually photograph your family in a few comfortable spaces in your home—often the bedroom, nursery, or living room—using natural window light.
During your session, we might capture:
Sessions are relaxed and baby-led, with plenty of time for feeding, diaper changes, and cuddles.
Many of the families I photograph in and around Westfield choose in-home newborn sessions because they allow everyone to stay comfortable during those early days with a new baby.
If you’re a New Jersey family with a baby on the way, I’d love to photograph your family!
