What to Bring to Your Outdoor Fall Newborn Session
Fall is a great time for outdoor newborn photos if you live in New Jersey. By September, the heat and humidity of summer is gone. But sunshine and warm days often abound through early October. If you’ve already booked a fall outdoor newborn session, or are considering one, you’ll want to bring a few things to ensure a great session.
Extra Outfits for Your Baby
I always recommend parents bring a back-up outfit or two for their newborn outdoor photo session. An extra outfit will allow me to capture more variety for your image gallery. And, since accidents happen, it’s a good idea to have a back-up option (and extra diapers, burp cloths and wipes) just in case your baby needs an outfit change.
Unsure about what outfits to choose for your baby? Don’t worry. I’m here to help. I know that clothing choices have a big impact on how much you love your images. (Be sure to read my tips for what to wear for newborn photos). That’s why as your New Jersey newborn and family photographer, I’ll help you choose clothing that will photograph well (e.g., simple onesies) and will add to the beauty of your images.
Baby and Swaddling Blankets
Even if your baby prefers not to be swaddled, I recommend you have a few swaddling blankets on hand. They’re great for keeping baby warm and cozy, and can add some texture and dimension to your images. I also suggest bringing along a neutral-colored baby blanket that coordinates with your family’s clothing colors (although I have a couple I bring along to every session). We’ll use these for shots of just your baby laying down. Have a special and meaningful quilt? Be sure to bring it along. I love to incorporate a blanket made by a family member, or with your baby’s name on it as a way of adding more meaning to your newborn photos.
Milk for Baby and Water for Momma
Newborns need lots of nourishment, as do new mommas! So whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed your baby, we’ll pause during your outdoor fall newborn session so that you can feed your baby. If you’re comfortable, I love to photograph this beautiful aspect of motherhood. In fact, images of mothers feeding their babies are among my and my clients most favorite to capture. They show the intimate bond between baby and momma in such a natural and relaxed way.
Of course, staying hydrated yourself will help ensure you feel and look your very best so be sure to bring a bottle or two of water to your session.
Baby Soothing Items
It’s not unusual for even the most easygoing babies to fuss a little (or lot-lol) at their newborn session. If there are certain items that help soothe your baby (i.e, a pacifier, a white noise or shushing app, or swaddle), be sure to bring these objects along. We can easily tuck a phone under the baby’s blanket or behind you during seated shots. For babies older than the newborn stage, be sure to bring any favorite or comforting stuffed animals or musical toys.. Favorite objects are a perfect for getting your baby’s attention for some looking at the camera shots.
