Are you unsure what to wear to your summer Newborn Photo Session? Not to worry. Whether you’re planning an outdoor photoshoot or a session in the comfort of your home, I’ve got a few tips to help you look and feel your best.
Choose varying shades of a color for each family member instead of matching too closely. This helps give your images a more natural feel, adds depth and keeps everyone from blending together too closely.
TIP: Choose colors that complement rather than clash with your baby’s nursery so that your images will look cohesive when displayed on the wall in her room.
I love texture in photos and unlike color, which can sometimes become distracting, texture can really enhance your images. Certain textures contrast beautifully to highlight the softness of a baby’s newborn skin. Some textures that look lovely and photograph well are lace, linen, knits, chambray, crepe fabrics, and waffle cloth.
Maxi or maternity dresses are among my favorite options and will give your images a feminine and nostalgic vibe. Dresses are also great for moms feeling a little self-conscious about their post-baby body. And, they will help keep you cool during your outdoor summer newborn photo session. For a more casual, but still flattering postpartum look, choose a flowing and textured short-sleeved tunic to pair with jeans or leggings.
Keep in mind that how you feel will show through in your photos. It can be helpful to remember that the focus of the photos we create during your session is on you snuggling your baby and the sentiment that comes across.
TIP: Be sure your clothing fits well, without being too tight, or too loose. You should be able to move comfortably and hold your baby without having to adjust your outfit or bra during your session.
It can be tempting to dress your baby in cute, busy outfits, but that will take the focus off your beautiful baby, which you don’t want. Choose outfits that have a timeless appeal and opt for solids over busy patterns. You can’t go wrong with a simple onesie in a neutral color, cream, or very muted color. Here are some ideas to inspire you. When in doubt, remember that the simplest pieces photograph best.
This may sound obvious, but it’s always a good idea to bring a couple back-up onesies for your baby and even an extra top for yourself and your spouse since you never know when your baby is going to drool, spit up or soak through their diaper.
Pick a solid shirt that compliments or coordinates with mom’s outfit. Avoid large logos and make sure tops fit well and won’t ride up when holding your baby up.
Above all else, make sure that you dress your child in well-fitted clothing she will feel comfortable in and don’t forget shoes! Shoes should coordinate, not clash with her outfit. Avoid brand new shoes or dirty sneakers. For an in-home summer newborn photo session, barefoot is an option too.
Although light colors are recommended, if you love richer colors, I can guide you in choosing shades that will work without taking away from the focus of your baby or creating unflattering color casts.
I hope you found these tips for what to wear for your outdoor summer newborn photo shoot helpful!
