One of the most common questions I hear from expecting moms is: “When is the best time for maternity photos?” The answer can feel tricky since every pregnancy is unique. But don’t worry — I’m here to help!
If you’re planning maternity photos in New Jersey, timing your session right can make a big difference in how comfortable you feel — and how beautifully your bump photographs.
These simple tips will guide you in choosing the best time for your maternity photos so your bump looks beautiful and you feel confident and comfortable.
For most moms, the best time to schedule maternity photos is usually between 27 and 34 weeks pregnant. This is when your bump is usually beautifully defined, but you’re still comfortable enough to move naturally and enjoy your photo session.
For most women, the third trimester (around 27-34 weeks, or 7-8 months of pregnancy) is the sweet spot.
Think of this as the “golden window” for maternity photography.
This is typically the best time because:
While 34–36 weeks is often ideal for first-time moms, some women still feel amazing later in pregnancy — like the mama featured in this post at 39 weeks.
If this is your first pregnancy, your bump might take longer to show. Some first-time moms prefer to book their maternity session closer to 34–36 weeks so the bump is more defined.
The example in this post features a gorgeous mama-to-be at 39 weeks, radiant and ready for her photoshoot.
Just keep in mind — if you wait until after 35 weeks, there’s a chance your little one could arrive earlier than expected, and you might miss the opportunity.
If you’re carrying multiples, it’s best to schedule your maternity photos earlier–usually between 24 and 28 weeks. Twin pregnancies often mean earlier deliveries, and by this time, your belly will already be beautifully rounded.
This is also a good guideline if you have a high-risk pregnancy or your doctor anticipates an earlier delivery.
Second (or third!) pregnancies often mean you’ll show sooner. Many moms who’ve been pregnant before find that booking before 30 weeks is ideal — ensuring your bump looks great and you’re still comfortable during your photo session.
And if you’re planning maternity photos while also chasing a little one around (because let’s be honest — toddler life is busy!), you may want to plan your session a bit earlier while you still have energy and flexibility. I also share tips for keeping your session calm, natural, and fun in my In-Home Maternity Photos with a Toddler Guide, which is especially helpful if you’re expecting baby #2 or #3.
Timing matters, but your comfort matters just as much.
If you’re feeling great at 32 weeks, that may be the perfect time. But if you’re already dealing with swelling, back pain, fatigue, or a difficult pregnancy, an earlier session may be a better choice.
The best maternity photos happen when you feel relaxed, confident, and able to move comfortably — whether we’re photographing you outdoors in beautiful New Jersey scenery or in the cozy comfort of your home.
Maternity sessions are popular, especially during the fall in New Jersey.
To make sure you reserve your preferred date, reach out to your photographer by the time you’re about 2 months pregnant. That way, you’ll be on the calendar well before your golden window arrives.
The best time for maternity photos in NJ is usually between 27–34 weeks, but every pregnancy is unique.
Whether you’re planning an outdoor session or cozy in-home maternity photos in New Jersey, the best timing is the time you’ll feel comfortable, confident, and glowing.
Most importantly, remember this: your maternity photos are about celebrating this incredible season of motherhood — not just the size of your bump.
If you’re unsure when to schedule, I’m always happy to help you choose the best timing based on your due date, how you’re feeling, and the season you’d love for your session.
If you’re ready to plan your maternity photos in New Jersey and want natural, timeless images that feel like you, I’d love to help you choose the perfect timing and location.
